Thank you so much Kirsi. I always appreciate your kindness.

I am inspired by your idea of genealogists paying it forward. I plan on sharing some Substacks on April 28. Thank you for such a great idea.

The idea of sharing research as a means of paying it forward is powerful. I have stood on the shoulders of several family historians who came before me. Without the work of Elizabeth Crowell Kolb, Howard Hinkson Convers and of course my cousin Linda Faivre my research would not be what it is. I hope to pay my research forward to anyone who wants it.

I also hope others catch on to this idea on April 28 and share some of the work of fellow family historians on Substack. Such a great idea, Kirsi. Thank you!

That's wonderful, and not very surprising to hear at all! :) Maybe we can start a movement?

Kirsi, your podcast and Robin Stewart's wonderful genealogymatters.substack.com with its weekly GenStack notes are themselves terrific examples of the pay-it-forward ethos in genealogy.

You've reminded me that Genealogy is a field that's inherently forward-looking. We put our work in to collect facts of the past specifically for the benefit of people in the future — usually building on the work of unnamed benefactors in the past.

I was thrilled once to return a family the 19th century cabinet card photograph of one of their ancestors that had found its way into our family collection. At the time, I remember hesitating, did I really have to give them the original? Now I'm embarrassed to think that I'd hesitated. I got to keep the story and give the gift of the artifact.

Having made a connection to the descendants, that card opened up a whole new perspective on one of the Quaker lines in my family and their open views about global immigration trends that were transforming the country at the time. I suspect the card had been a gift of thanks. Who knew that gift would extend generations. 😊

Sharing photos represents one of the best opportunities to pay it forward. Read a story on this theme in Grandma, Uncle Frank and the Red Baron @ Serengenity. Finding and sharing a copy of a woman's Gr Gr Grandparents' golden wedding anniversary.

Very thoughtful of you to share what you learn .

After Chris Died I had a bunch of his journals . After reading some of them i found a really nice story he wrote about his grandma coming to stout to watch him play football . He was very proud she came . I sent the letter to his grandma along with some other trinkets of his .
