I can't wait to read the next part! This story is similar to so many I've heard working with my WWII research clients and even in my own family. Love, war, quick marriage, sometimes babies and then families being torn apart for a time. Have you gotten his service file from NPRC? Navy files are intact. Have you looked on Fold3 for the WWII War Diaries for the ships he was on or the stations (land?) There are some great reports there if you haven't looked. You might get some more graphic details about his experience along with some photos. I'm looking forward to the next part to see what happens next!
Thank you. I am in the process of requesting his files. Fold3 hasn't been too rich in information in this case, unfortunately, but I'm always hopeful and always try different ways to search. Thanks for the tips and inspiration!
Have you searched for more than his name? the WWII War Diaries are full of good stuff but you have to search by ship, station, location, battle, etc., be creative. Also - and this is more difficult until you get his service file - there are levels to how the Navy was arranged. Once you know those levels, you search the war diaries for that as well.
So his ship was included in that sector for a period of time. NOB QUANTANAMO BAY. So when you open that Fold3 page go to the bottom where you can see the page # and Subject and use the arrows to scroll backward to Publication and see what's there. Usually publications have multiple reports and are sorted by date. ALSO - NOB Guantanamo Bay may also be indexed another way(s) depending on what was in the record. Fold3 doesn't have a consistent index system so it might show up as NOB Guant. Bay or other things with abbreviations and periods and spaces. It's crazy.
I don't see a specific war diary for USS Anteaus but one might be in there. Fold3 changed how they do searching and it's a royal pain. Used to be much easier.

He was on the USS Antaeus in 1944 - Navy Muster Rolls show this. If you search Fold3 for USS Anteaus you'll find several things. Go search within those levels of Navy and see what other context you can find. Good luck!
I like how you summarize the previous story at the beginning of each new story.
