Nobody talks much about injuries from horses. But when they were used in great numbers there must have been a lot of terrible injuries to both men and horses. Stieren's injuries sound terrible, leaving him unable to manage his bodily functions. It must have been terrible for his family. Did he live long after his discharge?

I meant to say for both him and his family.

That sounds horrible to be kicked by a horse! I cannot imagine. So cool that you went back that far in your historical research!

He did live until 1905, but it doesn’t seem like he had good quality of life, sadly. Which I’m sure was hard not only on him but his family as well. My GGM was 14 (and the youngest of the children) when her father died; her mother having died a few years prior. Life for her was tough after that. She went to work in a boarding house, alternating her residence between her older brother and the boarding house. She became pregnant out of wedlock and the man abandoned her.

Thomas is mom’s great-grandfather and my 2x great grandfather. The details of his injuries were outlined in his civil war pension files! Super horrific, but true.
