In our family, Easter doesn’t arrive with chocolate bunnies — it arrives with God Bread.
This hearty, savory pie has been made by many generations of my Italian-American family, tracing its roots back to Benevento, Italy, where my great-grandmother Giuseppa (Josephine) Corbo was born in 1897.
Also known in some circles as Italian Easter Pie, Pizza Rustica, or Easter Meat Pie, our version of God Bread includes traditional ingredients like basket cheese (a soft, seasonal cheese made from the first sheep’s milk of spring), parmesan, eggs, pork, and pepperoni, all layered inside a garlic- and pepper-infused dough.
I’ve written about this tradition in the past:
The Story of God Bread
In my family we have a tradition of making a special bread just ahead of the Easter holiday and we call it “God Bread”.
This year, my sisters, mom, my brother-in-law, and I all gathered to make 18 pies! It’s the first time we had done so much as a group and it worked great!
